I mean this in the most respectful way possible! I just want to find a way to express my opinion, controversial as it may be.
Here it is.
I HATE the word "homophobia" and its use in our society.
Now, the word in itself is fine. Perfectly legit definition and word.
My issue is that this word, in society, is used in the same way as racism, sexism, and other words like those.
Racism: prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism by an individual, community, or institution against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized:
Sexism: prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex.
Homophobia: dislike of or prejudice against gay people.
Spot the difference?
Racism - discrimination based on race
Sexism - discrimination based on sex
Homophobia - discrimination based on being gay
It is so incredibly one sided. Yes, homophobia exists. Yes, it is the most common form of this marginalisation. But not the only??!
But isn't it more suitable to have a word that includes any sexuality? Rather than having a community, an argument, a support, an understanding for gay people only?
Yes, there's nothing wrong with the word. But we use it so often that the world has become incredibly one-sided in regards to discrimination based on sexuality.
There you go. Let the hate comments follow where they may.
